- According to Sri Lanka’s own president, the country is “bankrupt.” The country went into economic and political instability after defaulting on its sovereign debt. The Colombo administration obtained a $2.9 billion rescue in principle from the International Monetary Fund. However, until China and India, Sri Lanka’s sovereign creditors, consent to a restructure of the billions of dollars in bilateral debt, the money won’t be given to Sri Lanka. The administration at the time was successful in luring substantial inflows of foreign investment.
- Travel has been disrupted this week as a deadly ice storm pummeling areas of the southern US, leading to major power disruptions in Texas. More than 2,300 flights have been cancelled by US airlines, with Dallas and Austin airports suffering the worst. Due to the poor weather, dozens of car accidents on slick roads were reported, resulting in six fatalities. Up until Thursday, the region is anticipated to experience freezing rain and ice accumulations. According to power outage, more than 340,000 individuals in Texas were without electricity.
- Kazuyoshi Miura, a Japanese striker, is about to be 56, he is still actively participating in football. Miura, is in his fifth decade of playing professionally, has signed a loan deal with Portuguese second-division club Oliveirense from J-League team Yokohama FC, making Portugal his sixth place of play. He said, “Even though this is a new environment for me”. He has already stated his intention to play till he is 60 years old. Miura scored two goals in 18 games while on loan at Suzuka Point Getters during the previous season.
- A recently found comet will pass by Earth at its closest. According to astronomers, the object travelled toward us for almost 50,000 years. Astronomers’ photographs reveal a striking green tint surrounding the comet’s body. Its brilliance is almost on the edge of what the human eye can see. If you know what to look for, you might be able to spot a smudge in the sky away from light pollution and beneath pitch-black skies. It will appear as a faint white blur through binoculars, where it will be easier for would-be astronomers to see.
- The president of the tribal organisation, Joel Jackson, has spent his entire life in the Tongass National Forest in Alaska. His neighbourhood depends on the land for deer hunting and salmon fishing in streams that are kept cold by the old-growth forest. After former President Donald Trump revoked a rule prohibiting logging and road construction on the Tongass by 2020. In more than half of the Tongass, the agency declared last Wednesday that it would once more forbid logging and the building of roads for the purpose of harvesting timber.
- In the UK, the largest bird flu outbreak is affecting mammals, such as otters and foxes. According to statistics, the virus is believed to have killed 208 million birds and caused 200 cases of animal infection. The mutation in mammals could spread to people, public health officials warn, but the risk to the general population is quite low. Animals and people exposed to the virus will now be the subject of more focused observation and testing in the UK. The UK Health Security Agency continues to caution that the disease mostly affects birds.
