1. The origin of the word mustard may be Latin, because they are taken from two Latin words: mustum and ardens. ‘Must’ is crushed grapes which Romans used with crushed mustard seeds and arden means ‘burning’ referring to the fiery taste. Combined, these two words developed into the common term mustard.
2. John Lennon, the legendary singer, despised his own voice. Because he disliked his own voice so much, Lennon frequently double-tracked his albums. Even being a member of The Beatles, a popular English rock band, he was disappointed with all of their recordings. How do you feel about your own voice?
3. The colour red is an amazing colour which can be expressed in various hues. All it takes is mixing the right amounts of white or black with red to get a range of hues between light pink to deeper tones like violet. Each hue can have a special meaning. How many hues of red can you find at home?
4. The Earth’s magnetic field is deteriorating. This is due to the solidification of iron, from the outer core, on top of the inner core’s surface. As the inner core expands and the outer core contracts, the magnetic field weakens because less molten metal flows around.
5. Although the author was born as Marguerite Annie Johnson, she released her writings by the name Maya Angelou. Bailey Jr., her only brother, named her ‘Maya’, which means ‘my sister. Maya Angelou kept this nickname throughout her life and career. What nickname(s) do your siblings call you?
6. In 1992, John Sullivan and five other CSIRO employees revisited Sullivan’s unsuccessful radio waves experiment and developed a device that could detect the weakest radio signals. Finally, as success! WiFi was first introduced in 1997! The development of WiFi was unexpected but warmly appreciated.
