  1. Assault-style firearms and high-capacity ammunition should be banned by the US to address the “carnage” of gun violence, said President Joe Biden in his nation address after mass shootings took place. The President stated that too many areas are becoming “killing fields”. Mr Biden suggested that the age limit for buying weapons should be changed to 18 or 21 if the ban is not possible. The progress, however seems unlikely because of the issue between Democrats and Republicans in Congress. Republicans still support access to firearms.
  2. Tesla staff were commanded to return to the office on a full-time basis as remote working is no longer an option. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla shared this new policy via emails to all Tesla staff. Emails stated “Everyone at Tesla is required to spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week,” and “If you don’t show up, we will assume you have resigned.”. Some emails were leaked on social media. On Twitter, Elon Musk said staff who are not willing to follow this new policy should “pretend to work somewhere else”.
  3. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is accused of bribery and kidnapping by the country’s former spy chief, Arthur Fraser. Mr Fraser said the case relates to the 2020 $4m (£3.2m) alleged theft attempt at one of the president’s homes. Mr Ramaphosa responded saying “there is no basis for the claims of criminal conduct”. Some view Auther Fraser as an associate of former President Jacob Zuma, others suggest this allegation is an internal attack on leadership within the African National Congress (ANC) ahead of the December presidential race.
  4. The California government has approved a reparation plan to pay California residents who can prove they are descendants of enslaved people. The plan was approved in March this year. A reparations task force was established in 2020 within the state to research a reparation case for what is known as ” America’s original sin of slavery”. With this plan California will become the first US state to offer reparations or restitution for slavery to black Americans. Genealogists say the true struggle will be finding the evidence.
  5. Germans are now able to travel around the country for only €9 (£7.50; $9.50) a month. This is an attempt from the German federal government to fight the increasing cost of living. All regional and local transport authorities have joined the government’s initiative except for inter-city trains. Although the petrol price was reduced by about 30 cents per litre and diesel prices are being reduced by about 14 cents per litre for the next three months, these cheap tickets aim to have people use public transport instead of driving their cars.
  6. A seagrass about three times the surface area of Manhattan was discovered just off the coast of Australia. Researchers from the University of Western Australia accidentally discovered the plant at Shark Bay, 800km north of Perth. By means of genetic testing, the team was able to determine the massive underwater pasture in Western Australia was really just one plant. They stated that the seagrass plant spreads over 200 square kilometers.
