This week the team has created some rather informative and interesting facts. Enjoy these facts and learn something new about the events occurring in our world.

1. Chewing gum makes you feel more energetic. People are more focused after chewing gum. Research has shown that chewing mint gum tricks the body into feeling awake, just like the effect of an energy drink or a cup of coffee. Chewing gum can also improve test scores, memory and anxiety.

2. Helen Keller was deaf and blind but learnt how to read and write while campaigning for the deaf and blind community. Helen became the first deaf-blind person to obtain a bachelor’s degree and campaign for social, political, and disability issues. Helen raised funds and awareness for blind communities.

1. In the fight against global hunger, genetically modified organisms have been introduced. GMOs are plants, animals, or microbes whose DNA has been altered using scientific techniques. Genetic foods can cause allergic reactions to different kinds of foods, cancer, and a resistance to antibiotics.

2. Eleanor Roosevelt was the first lady of America as well as the chair of the U.S. Human Rights Commission. Eleanor was the first lady of the USA from 1933 to 1945, during her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency. Eleanor advocated for human rights, women’s rights, and many children’s causes.

3. The Greek philosopher Aristotle came up with a system of government known as aristocracy. This type of governance is when the intelligibly superior makes decisions in the interests of all. Contrary to Aristotle, he supported the combination of oligarchy and democracy as an ideal system of governance.

4. Almost 100 million people are killed each year by pollution, one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Every year, pollution kills 100,000 marine mammals and over 1 million seabirds. Individuals who reside in areas with high air pollution levels have a 20% higher risk of dying from lung cancer.

5. Colors can be smelled by some people. Synesthesia occurs when our minds involuntarily blend sensations that are usually experienced separately. This explains why some individuals can see the shapes of emotions, smell colors, or hear shapes. People who experience this tend to be born with the skill.

6. Paper money became the most common asset to purchase goods and services. Before the invention of coins, food and precious metals were among the things people traded to get something they desired in return. China was the first to invent paper money in the 19th century.
