1. Ever heard of ‘you use more muscles to frown than to smile’? It is not scientifically true. In fact, it takes more facial muscles to smile than to frown on average. It does, however, take more effort to frown. Save that energy any remember to always try to turn that frown upside down.
2. Ever heard a health specialist talk about an oath? The Hippocratic Oath is named after the father of medicine, ancient Greek physician, Hippocrates. This was significant for its humanely principled aspects in the medical field. Today, medical students are sworn in by this oath.
3. Approximately half of the world’s population watched the 2010 & 2014 FIFA World Cup games. That’s about 3.2 billion people! This goes to show how popular this sport is. Which country were you rooting for? Even if it was not your own country, it’s okay.
4. As big as the Sahara desert in Africa is, only about a quarter of it is sandy. The rest of it consists of gravel, mountains and oases. It is also not the largest desert in the world; Antarctica is. Who said deserts are only hot and sandy?
5. Kleenex tissues were originally made for gas masks during World War I. There was a shortage of cotton filters and Kimberly-Clark manufactured this substitute. This did not happen as planned. So it was re-developed to be much softer and smoother; the Kleenex facial tissues we know today.
6. On this day in 1840, Sir Rowland Hill created the world’s first postage stamp (Penny Black) which was released in England. 131 years later, the first email was sent by Ray Tomlinson from MIT. For convenience, thank you technology but there’s just something about a hand written-letter don’t you think?
