YOUR WEEKLY NEWS UPDATE

  1. The United Kingdom will supply an excess £1 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, nearly doubling its aid for the conflict against the Russian invasion. The new funding brings total military aid to Kyiv to £2.3 billion, with the UK also providing £1.5 billion in humanitarian and economic assistance to Ukraine. British spending, according to Boris Johnson, is trying to transform Ukraine’s defences. President Zelensky had earlier prompted Nato leaders to do more to assist Ukraine’s war effort.
  2. According to a new map, there could be roughly two million trees in England with excellent environmental value that have previously gone unrecorded. That is ten times the number today on official records. This tree-map strikes a unique note of hope in sustainability. However, the Woodland Trust cautions that these trees, known as ancient specimens, have no legal protection. It arises after the council chopped down a centuries-old oak tree in Peterborough on Wednesday, claiming it was the cause of structural damage to residential areas.
  3. Amazon has strictly limited search queries for LGBT individuals and issues on its website in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The company took the action in response to alleged tension from law enforcement agencies in the Gulf state. In the UAE, same-sex sexual relationships are prohibited. Supporting LGBT rights can also be considered a crime. The announcement comes as the month-long celebration of LGBT people across the world, Pride Month, comes to an end.
  4. Chinese President Xi Jinping has shown up in Hong Kong to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the former British colony’s return to Chinese control. This is his first trip outside of China since the pandemic began nearly two and a half years ago. Mr. Xi was met by students flying Chinese and Hong Kong flags as he arrived by high-speed train. With road closures and a no-fly zone overhead, security around the convention centre hosting events is tight. There have been no details released about the president’s travel plans.
  5. Elon Musk’s transgender daughter has filed paperwork to legally change her name and gender, stating that she no longer wishes to be related to her biological father in any way. The 18-year-old has requested that she be identified as female and given the name Vivian Jenna Wilson. Xavier Alexander Musk was her birth name. The petition for a rebranding and a new birth certificate was filed in Santa Monica with the Los Angeles County Superior Court this April. There was no further information about the apparent split between her and Mr Musk.
  6. In its first year, Meta’s system of complaints against its actions to remove content from Facebook and Instagram got approximately 1.1 million cases. The disputed posts, the majority of which originated in the United States, Canada, or Europe, had mostly been removed due to violence, offensive language, or bullying. The Oversight Board ruled against Meta 14 times out of the 20 cases in which it issued decisions. One case involved the removal of photos of female breasts from a breast cancer post.
