DID YOU KNOW?

Have a look through our facts for this week and tell us what you think?

1. Have you ever heard the expression “You use more muscles to frown than to smile”? This is not true from a scientific standpoint. In fact smiling requires more face muscles than frowning. In contrast, frowning demands more effort. Save your energy and remember to change that frown upside down!

2. Have you ever heard a doctor talk about taking an oath? The Hippocratic Oath is named after Hippocrates, the father of medicine and an ancient Greek physician. This was crucial in the medical industry because of its humanely principled elements. Today, medical students are sworn in by this oath.

3. Approximately half of the world’s population watched the 2010 & 2014 FIFA World Cup games. That’s about 3.2 billion people! This goes to show how popular this sport is. Which country were you rooting for? Even if it was not your own country, it’s okay.

4. As big as the Sahara desert in Africa is, only about a quarter of it is sandy. The rest of it consists of gravel, mountains and oases. It is also not the largest desert in the world; Antarctica is. Who said deserts are only hot and sandy?

5. On this day in 1840, Sir Rowland Hill created the world’s first postage stamp (Penny Black) which was released in England. 131 years later, the first email was sent by Ray Tomlinson from MIT. For convenience, thank you technology but there’s just something about a handwritten-letter don’t you think?

6. Kleenex tissues were originally made for gas masks during World War I. There was a shortage of cotton filters and Kimberly-Clark manufactured this substitute. This did not happen as planned. So it was redeveloped to be much softer and smoother; the Kleenex facial tissues we know today.
