- Kuttiyamma, a 104-year- old woman in the southern Indian state of Kerala, had always wanted to go to school, but an early marriage and a life centred on household chores put an end to her dream. The dream became true when she finally got a chance to join a government-sponsored literacy programme. At 104, she learnt how to read and write – something she had wanted to do since her childhood and then she made headlines by scoring 89 marks out of 100 in the official literacy test.
- Walt Disney has elected a woman as a chairperson of its board for the first time in the entertainment giant’s 98-year history. Susan Arnold, who has been a Disney board member since 14 years ago, will succeed Bob Iger at the end of this year. She was previously an executive at global investment firm Carlyle. Mr. Iger, who stepped down as Disney’s chief executive in 2020 after 15 years in the role, will leave Disney by the end of December 2021.
- The magnetic hard drives we currently use for computer data storage can take up lots of space and they have to be replaced over time.Using life’s preferred storage medium to back up our precious data would allow large amounts of information to be archived in tiny molecules. The data would also last thousands of years, according to scientists’ research. A team in Atlanta, US, has now developed a small chip that they say could improve on existing form of DNA storage by a factor of 100.
- Elodie Bateson has been blind since her birth, but the 11-year-old from Limavady has become a professional at making short animated movies. She uses a voice-assisted tablet and specialist braille technology that help her in making the movies. It gives her detailed descriptions as she works and audio prompts also allow her to capture photographs. Elodie and her family has received technology training through the Family Insight Project, a partnership between Angel Eyes and RNIB.
- It was a typical response from Ronaldo to recent suggestions that his style of play might not suit the pressing approach favoured by incoming interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who was at Old Trafford for the first time since his appointment to watch the Portuguese reach the astonishing landmark, and the German cannot fail to have been impressed by the 36-year-old. Ronaldo’s double took him to 130 goals across two spells for United, adding to five for Sporting Lisbon, 450 for Real Madrid, 101 for Juventus and 115 for Portugal.
- With fewer Santas donning their suits and increased demand for holiday cheer, Santa will be in short supply. The pandemic took its toll on the industry as many Santas are older, heavier men. A combination of the labor shortage, COVID-19 concerns and increased demand for the big old guy has caused a Santa shortage. The company HireSanta said its demand has increased up to 120% since pre-pandemic times.
